Microplastics in Spanish Table Salt

Iñiguez ME, Conesa JA, Fullana A (2017). Scientific Reports. doi:10.1038/s41598-017-09128-x · CC BY 4.0

Step 1 of 2Read the paper

The authors bought 21 table salts made in Spain, both sea salts and inland well salts, and checked them for microplastics. They dissolved the salt, filtered the solution, counted plastic particles under a microscope and identified the type of plastic with infrared spectroscopy. They also sampled salt before and after grinding and packing to look for where the plastic comes from.

How to read it

  • Read the abstract and the last paragraph of the Introduction to see the aim and why earlier salt studies disagreed.
  • Table 1 is the core result: one row per salt sample with particles per kg and its ± range.
  • In Methods, note the filter pore size, the triplicate repeats and the procedural blank.
  • Check the 2018 Author Correction (linked on the article page), which softens the comments about Karami et al.
